Duncan House

Duncan House

187 Evergreen Lane

Acme, PA

Year Built:
1957

The Pennsylvania Duncan House is a great place to stay when visiting Falling Water. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1957, the Duncan House is one of Wright’s later Usonian homes. Originally located in Lisle, Illinois, it was commissioned by Don and Elizabeth Duncan. But in an amazing feat of engineering, the Duncan House was relocated in 2007 to the Polymath Park Resort in Acme, Pennsylvania, after falling into disrepair.

The ambitious move was overseen by preservation experts and restored and opened for overnight stays.

The Duncan house exemplifies Wright’s continued commitment to affordable, democratic architecture, even in his final years. The 2,850-square-foot residence features Wright’s signature low horizontal lines and natural integration with nature. Using natural materials, it was built primarily of concrete block, cypress wood, and glass.

It has a central hexagonal living area, with spaces flowing organically into one another, and Clerestory windows flooding the interior with natural light. The dramatic cantilevered roof maintains privacy. Lastly, built-in furnishings and meticulous attention to detail reflect his belief in total design unity.
