Duncan House

Duncan House

187 Evergreen Lane

Acme, PA

Year Built:
1957

The Duncan House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1957, stands as one of his later Usonian works in Lisle, Illinois. Commissioned by Don and Elizabeth Duncan, the house exemplifies Wright’s continued commitment to affordable, democratic architecture even in his final years.

The 2,850-square-foot residence features Wright’s signature low horizontal lines and natural integration with its wooded site. Built primarily of concrete block, cypress wood, and glass, the Duncan House showcases the architect’s mastery of geometric forms through its hexagonal module—a design motif Wright explored extensively in his later career.

The home’s floor plan radiates from a central hexagonal living area, with spaces flowing organically into one another. Clerestory windows flood the interior with natural light while maintaining privacy, and the dramatic cantilevered roof extends Wright’s philosophy of shelter. Built-in furnishings and meticulous attention to detail reflect his belief in total design unity.

Remarkably, the Duncan House was relocated in 2007 from its original Lisle location to the Polymath Park Resort in Acme, Pennsylvania, after falling into disrepair. This ambitious move, overseen by preservation experts, saved the structure from demolition and allowed it to be restored and opened for overnight stays, ensuring Wright’s vision continues to inspire visitors and architecture enthusiasts today.
