Galesburg, MI
The Curtis and Lillian Meyer House, a Frank Lloyd Wright House, was built on land purchased in the 1940s by employees of the Upjohn Pharmaceutical Company. The employees envisioned a Wright-planned residential cooperative called “The Acres”, also known as the Galesburg Country Homes/ The Meyer House is considered a Usonian House, but it has a special design called the solar hemicycle, which is a curved, drum-like form with a wing extending out, opening to the east and slightly south. Additionally, the concrete blocks used in its construction were custom-built, not molded like other houses nearby. Concert singer Doug LaBrecque bought the house in 2003 and began an amazing 13-year restoration to bring it back to its former glory. This included removing glued-down carpeting and fixing extensive water damage. This effort earned him a 2021 Wright Spirit Award from the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy. Both the Meyer House and The Acres were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. The home is now open for overnight stays, and reviews are overwhelmingly positive.
