Woodside House

1119 W Overlook Rd

Marion, IN

Year Built:
1955

The Woodside house is formally known as the Dr. Richard Davis House. It has an interesting origin story. Wright and the doctor met at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MI, where Wright was having his gallbladder removed. Dr. Davis was the first assistant on the surgical team that was operating on Wright.

The two struck up a friendship that led to the commission of the house located in the Shady Hills neighborhood in Washington Township, just north of Marion in Grant County, Indiana, in 1955.

As was typical with Wright designs, the house has large fireplaces, painted concrete block, and hot water heating coils in the concrete floor. But the most strking features is the 40-foot-tall apex of the home, built around the fireplace chimney and inspired by the geometry of Sioux teepees.

In 1958, Wright was commissioned again to design a “teenage wing” for the growing Davis family. And around the same time, a guest house was added to the property, which Wright also designed to house a live-in maid.

The house is open for overnight stays and has very positive reviews.
